About

Janet Swailes originated from and now lives again in the Upper Eden Valley, Cumbria. She works professionally as a landscape architect and an artist, is a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute, and has a PhD in Landscape Architecture from Edinburgh College of Art, where she was an undergraduate.

‘In 2016 Routledge published my book Field Sketching and the Experience of Landscape.  My current arts practice is as a sketchbook artist, with subjects found mostly close to home, along with sketching trips further afield.  Favourite places include the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, Northumbria, and Cornwall, where I explore some similar themes around cultural landscapes.  I also sketch as travel opportunities allow, recently including Morroco and Greece; in the past Italy and Germany.  I studied and worked as an artist printmaker at the Edinburgh Printmakers, Marburg University (Germany), and Taigh Chearsabhagh Art and Heritage Centre (North Uist).  I use the layering potential of print and mixed media to interpret the landscape.’
